Vegans now have more than just fries to order on the menu.
For plant-based foodies itching for a fast-food fix, KFC debuted its new menu item: Beyond Fried Chicken.
As of Jan. 10, the fried chicken chain is offering vegetarian-friendly nuggets in partnership with Beyond Meat, which created the fried chicken special for KFC.
Despite it being sans-meat, the nugs promise the juicy, savory flavor true to traditional KFC chicken and just as finger lickin’ good.
“The mission from Day One was simple – make the world-famous Kentucky Fried Chicken from plants,” said KFC president, Kevin Hochman. “And now over two years later we can say, ‘mission accomplished.’ ”
The campaign — dubbed a “Kentucky Fried Miracle” featuring actress, producer and internet personality Liza Koshy — made KFC the first quick-service restaurant to include plant-based chicken when it was first coined.
In 2019, the chain, in partnership with Beyond Meat, tested the meatless fried chicken in Atlanta, which sold out in five hours. The following year, the team expanded test runs to select locations in Nashville, Tennessee, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Southern California, which sold out in a week.
The Beyond Fried Chicken is also available as KFC’s first combo meal that is entirely plant-based, complete with its Secret Recipe Fries and a drink.
“We couldn’t be prouder to partner with KFC to offer a best-in-class product that not only delivers the delicious experience consumers expect from this iconic chain, but also provides the added benefits of plant-based meat,” said CEO and founder of Beyond Meat Ethan Brown. “We are truly thrilled to make it available to consumers nationwide.”
This isn’t KFC’s first innovation in recent years. In August, the Kentucky-based chain introduced a pop-up hotel in London, where fried chicken fanatics could live out their greasy dreams with the touch of a “Press For Chicken” button.
