Murphy, who scored three winners for Liverpool against Manchester United in his career, says he would never call out a pundit during his playing days. He added: “You might listen in the four walls of your own home.

“I remember years ago, one of my first times on Match of the Day and Alan Hansen did a piece, some of it was good and some of it wasn’t. I didn’t go out in the press and say anything about Alan Hansen, I just took it on. I wouldn’t do that.

“It shows you are bothered. The mentality of an elite is ‘I’ll get on with my job and I’ll keep doing it the best I can’.

“What is said doesn’t bother me. That’s what you’ve got to show, your resilience.”
