Pep Guardiola has paid tribute to the “magnificent” pilot who kept the Manchester City players and staff calm while successfully navigating the strong winds of Storm Dudley to divert the club’s plane to Liverpool. Scary footage emerged on social media on Thursday of City’s flight struggling to touch down in Manchester before it was forced to abort its landing.

Guardiola’s side were returning from a successful Champions League trip to Sporting, who they dispatched 5-0 to put one foot into the quarter-finals.

The triumph was briefly overshadowed by the nervy experience but thankfully, City were able to land safely at Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport.

Now Guardiola has taken the time to thank the pilot for his calmness and clear communication throughout the ordeal ahead of this weekend’s visit of Tottenham.

He said: “Well to be honest, when I saw after the video, I said ‘wow’, it was more scary than we felt.

Now attention turns back to the Premier League as they prepare to host Antonio Conte’s Tottenham.

The Spurs boss has labelled his opposite number Guardiola “the best coach in the world” ahead of the meeting at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool are now breathing down City’s neck and can move within six points of the champions should they win their game in hand against Leeds in midweek.

The Reds host Dean Smith’s Norwich on Saturday afternoon as they look to put the pressure on City ahead of their evening clash with Spurs.
