“I know we tried but it was too far away to be done because Tottenham was clear this is not going to happen. When it happens 2, 3, 4 times, it’s over.”

With Kane passing his 29th birthday before the start of next season and with City having bought 22-year-old striker Julian Alvarez from River Plate for the start of next season, their pursuit of the Spurs front man would seem to be over.

But Guardiola admitted he remains an admirer of the Spurs striker and said he is wary of what a wounded Tottenham might do this evening after three defeats on the spin.

“This is the problem for us,” said Guardiola. “The fact that they’ve lost three times means they’ll be more difficult, for sure.
